THREE of my four grandparents immigrated to America from Russia, through Ellis Island, in the early 1920s. My father grew up in Brooklyn, and my mother in Buffalo. I was born in Syracuse, where my father was in medical school. After he graduated, he was drafted into the Air Force, which assigned him first to San Francisco, then to Madrid, where we lived for three years.

When I was 9, my parents decided to settle in the suburbs south of San Francisco. Later, I went to Stanford, where I studied international relations. In college, I began to get involved in Jewish activities and that’s how I met Laura, my wife.

In 1982, I went to Japan on an International Rotary Foundation graduate fellowship. The experience exposed me to a fascinating culture.

When I returned the following summer, I moved to Los Angeles to be with Laura and worked selling dictating equipment to small businesses. Selling wasn’t much fun, and I kept thinking about my Jewish leadership activities in college. I was accepted into rabbinical school, but after a year, I decided it just wasn’t right for me. A business career looked attractive after all. I was accepted by Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and began the program in 1986. At the time, my wife and I had a 4-month-old son.

After I earned my M.B.A., Procter & Gamble hired me to work at its Cincinnati headquarters. I was lucky to work under A. G. Lafley, who later became the company’s chief executive, and Susan Arnold, who became a vice chairwoman. During that time, my father, who had gone on to complete a law degree at night while he was still practicing medicine in the Bay Area, went blind from diabetes. I decided that after seven years in Cincinnati, it was time to return to California. In 1995, the Clorox Company in Oakland hired me as its first global marketing manager, and I later became general manager of its pet products category.

But across the bay, in Silicon Valley, Internet businesses were beginning to explode, and I wanted to be part of it. So I left to become vice president of marketing for three different Internet start-ups. I left the third start-up, Cariocas, only days before the 9/11 terrorist attacks. As a result of the dot-com bubble’s bursting, it became impossible to find a good job quickly.

A few former P.& G. colleagues worked at Intuit, the maker of TurboTax, so I joined in September 2002. After four years, I gave myself a sabbatical. My wife was flexible because she was working on her Ph.D. dissertation, so we took the opportunity to be ski bums at Tahoe, drive Route 66 and scuba-dive in the South Pacific.

It was back to work in 2007, as chief executive of a social networking start-up, Visible Path, now called Hoovers Connect. In November of that year, I became chief executive of the three-year-old IMVU, where people connect and interact through avatars they create in a virtual community. It has more than 45 million registered users.

In this job, I’ve been able to apply the marketing skills I learned at P.& G. and the general management lessons I learned at Intuit. My first year was challenging, and raising $10 million in new funding after the recession hit was hard. The past year has been great, and we recently announced that IMVU had doubled revenue, to over $2 million a month, and that we’re profitable. IMVU is “free to play” — meaning there is no cost to use it — but some users buy virtual goods, especially avatar clothing. Those purchases are 85 percent of our revenue, and the rest is from ads.
